Why & How I Painted "Bopper"
Every commissioned portrait carries a story, but “Bopper” was something special. When I was approached to paint him, I immediately felt the emotional weight behind the request. This wasn’t just a portrait of a beloved pet — it was a tribute, a way of honouring a companion who had shaped a family’s life.
As an artist, these are the moments that remind me why I paint: to capture connection, memory, and the quiet, powerful bonds that define us.
Who Bopper Is
Before I ever touched a brush, I spent time studying the reference photos and listening to the stories shared by the owner. Bopper had a presence — gentle, loyal, expressive — and I wanted the painting to reflect that.
My goal was to create a portrait that didn’t just look like him, but felt like him. The softness in his eyes, the warmth in his expression, the sense of calm he brought to the people who loved him — these emotional cues shaped every decision that followed.
How I Painted "Bopper"
I documented the entire journey, from the first pencil marks to the final varnish. Here’s how the portrait came to life:
Sketching the Foundation
I began with a loose, expressive sketch to map out his proportions and capture the tilt of his head — a subtle detail that conveyed his personality.
Blocking in the Base Colours
Using broad strokes, I established the main colour zones: warm tones for the fur, cooler tones for the background. This stage is always about energy and movement, not precision.
Building Depth Through Layers
Acrylics allow me to work in layers, gradually refining texture and form. This is where Bopper’s character began to emerge — the softness of his coat, the highlights in his eyes, the gentle transitions of light across his face.
Fine Details and Emotional Expression
The final layers are always the most intimate. Tiny brushstrokes around the eyes, subtle shifts in colour temperature, and delicate highlights brought him fully to life. This is the moment when the painting stops being “a dog” and becomes Bopper.
Presenting the Painting
One of the most meaningful parts of this commission was presenting the finished painting to the customer. Their reaction — the emotion, the gratitude, the connection — reminded me why I pour so much of myself into each piece.
Art becomes a bridge between memory and the present, and seeing that impact firsthand is something I’ll always treasure.
Step-By-Step: Bringing Bopper to Life
Bopper” is more than a commission — it’s a reminder of the deep emotional connections we share with the animals in our lives. I’m honoured to have been trusted with this portrait, and I hope it brings comfort, joy, and lasting memory to the family who loved him so dearly.
